Herbals and

Supplements

Nutraceuticals are a “targeted therapy” approach, and are supplements that contain specific nutritional and/or herbal elements. Nutraceuticals can be a powerful instrument to improve health complaints, support optimal structure or function of the body, correct hormonal imbalances, improve metabolism, delay the aging process, extend life expectancy, and lower risk of disease.

Dr. Alberts uses targeted nutraceutical therapies that are founded in strong research and scientific evidence. This approach may be used alone, but most often is prescribed  in combination with other treatments, such as diet and lifestyle modifications.

Oftentimes a nutraceutical approach may be desired over pharmacotherapy (prescriptions) due to lower side effect profiles and overall more comprehensive approach. An common example of this is berberine (nutraceutical) and metformin (pharmacotherapy), both used in treatment of type 2 diabetes and insulin resistance. While metformin is a treatment Dr. Alberts may prescribe, it can often bring about unwanted gastrointestinal side effects and is well-known to cause certain nutritional deficiencies. Berberine is an herb that has been well-documented not only to improve insulin sensitivity, but it’s also been shown to lower LDL-C, triglycerides, ApoB and inflammatory markers such as hs-CRP and IL-6. In some studies it’s also been shown to reduce high blood pressure. Which approach will be the safest and most effective is considered for each individual.

Here are some of the ways that nutraceuticals may be prescribed:

Supporting Hormonal Balance:

There are several approaches to improve estrogen metabolism, correct estrogen dominance, improve menstrual cycle health and support menopausal concerns.

Supporting Optimal Metabolic Health:

Options here can help improve insulin sensitivity, lipid metabolism, blood pressure and cardiovascular health.

Improving Antioxidant Defenses:

Many options in this category include things such as NAC, Vitamin C, tocopherols, resveratrol and polyphenols.

Supporting the Immune System:

There are many herbs, nutrients, and other compounds that improve immunity and help the body fight off infections.

Supporting Mitochondrial Function:

Things like CoQ10, ALA, carnitine and NMN can be helpful for improving the differentiation and preservation of mitochondrial integrity.

Reducing Inflammation:

Many anti-inflammatory herbs and supplements, such as turmeric and omega-3 fatty acids, help to reduce inflammation in the body.

Supporting Digestion:

Digestive enzymes, herbs and probiotics can help to support healthy digestion and nutrient absorption.

Managing Stress:

Adrenal adaptogens such as ashwagandha or cortisol glandulars are mainstays in this category, and magnesium can be very helpful to help manage stress and promote relaxation.

Dr. Alberts is trained to evaluate the safety and efficacy of herbal nutraceuticals and to ensure that they do not interact with other medications or supplements that a patient may be taking. She may also recommend specific dosages and formulations based on a patient’s individual needs and health status.
